Why Meal Planning is a Powerful Tool During the Cost of Living Crisis

As the cost of living continues to rise in Australia and around the world, more of us are looking for practical ways to stretch our household budgets without sacrificing our health. One of the most overlooked yet powerful tools for navigating this financial pressure is meal planning.

I’ve been talking about meal planning and meal prepping for years now, and not just because it’s trendy or convenient—though it can be both! I’m passionate about it because I’ve seen firsthand how it can transform lives, save time, reduce stress, and help you eat better for less.

Meal Planning: More Than Just a Kitchen Task

What’s fascinating is that many people treat meal planning as something separate from their regular budgeting or lifestyle habits. But food is one of the biggest expenses in our household budgets—right up there with housing and transport. Yet unlike rent or petrol, we have much more control over how we spend on food.

Meal planning is not just about what’s for dinner. It’s about intentionally choosing how you fuel your body and your family’s bodies. It’s about making healthier decisions easier and more accessible. And yes, it’s about saving serious money on groceries.

Healthy, Wealthy and (More) Free

There’s a common saying that “health is wealth,” and I’d add that time is wealth too. Meal planning supports both.

  • Financial wealth: With a clear meal plan and a bit of prep, you’ll avoid unnecessary takeout and impulse buys. In fact, just by bringing your own lunch instead of buying it each day, you could save over $3,000 a year. That’s a holiday, a debt payment, or a chunk off your mortgage.
  • Health wealth: When you plan meals in advance, you’re more likely to prepare balanced, nourishing food and skip the greasy drive-through or sugar-loaded snacks.
  • Time wealth: Meal planning lets you reclaim your time. You spend less time wondering what to cook and more time doing the things you love.

I’ll be honest—I don’t love cooking. What I do love is being creative, using what’s already in my fridge and pantry, and making food that my husband and I actually enjoy. But mostly, I love how meal planning gives me the freedom to spend less time in the kitchen and more time living life.

A Simple Habit With Big Rewards

Meal planning isn’t complicated. It’s a habit, and like all habits, it compounds over time. Just like saving money earns interest, planning your meals adds up to big results across your budget, health, and lifestyle.

I talk about this a lot on my YouTube channel, and I’ve even done a whole video breaking down the numbers—how much you can save just by prepping your lunches. Spoiler: it’s a lot more than you think.

Why I’m So Passionate About This

Everyone eats. That’s the one constant. So why not do it smarter? Why not make food a part of your life that supports your goals instead of getting in the way?

Meal planning and meal prepping have helped me and countless others find a healthier, simpler, and more affordable way to live. And I truly believe they can do the same for you—whether you’re in Australia or anywhere else in the world.
