Simple home made salsa recipe

Posted on May 29, 2025May 29, 2025 by Simple Essentials

We love this budget friendly and simple home made salsa recipe, and best of all – it’s so cheap and easy to make. You can vary this up with any seasonings you like, but below are the standard ones I tend to use. I would encourage you to have a look at the ingredients in your store bought salsa as well (usually it has heaps of sugar added!).

Simple salsa recipe:

Ingredients:

  • 400 ml diced tomatoes (you can also add fresh tomatoes if you prefer)
  • 1 tsp lemon or lime juice
  • half a yellow or red onion (diced small)
  • 1 tsp coriander leaves (fresh coriander works too)
  • salt and pepper to taste
  • Chilli powder (optional, for an extra kick)
  • A pinch of sugar (optional, but this will cut the acidity of the tomatoes)

How to make it:

  1. Use a strainer to drain some of the tomato liquid out of the tomatoes (about 1/4 cup)
  2. Stir in lemon/lime juice, onion and your seasonings
  3. Optional: Add a pinch of sugar for extra sweetness and some chilli powder for extra spice
  4. Stir together and store in an airtight container in your fridge for 3-4 days.
